Cold-Water Shores
8 beaches
Northern and temperate beaches where the water is too cold to swim comfortably and nobody pretends otherwise. The value is in the landscape, the light and the emptiness. Several of these beaches photograph as tropical and sit at ten to fourteen degrees, which is the single most common misreading in this world. What they offer is landscape and light rather than bathing, and the register is explicit about temperature on each record so that nobody arrives expecting otherwise. The compensation is emptiness and light — beaches at these latitudes absorb their visitors easily, and several have a midnight sun or an aurora season. A wetsuit changes what is possible on almost every beach in this world, and locals own one. The cold is also what keeps them empty: a shore at twelve degrees carries a fraction of the people a warm one does, whatever else it has.

Against Volcanic Shores: if the sand is black, material wins. Against Grand Ocean Strands: this world is for beaches whose defining fact is the temperature and the northern light.
