Mega-Resort Strips

8 beaches

Continuous dense tourist development along kilometres of shore: dozens of hotels, restaurants and commercial zones with no gap. The beach is the amenity of a resort district rather than a place with its own name. The beaches themselves are often excellent, which is easy to forget in the argument about what has been built on them. What the register records alongside that is the arrangement: continuous hotel frontage, public access confined to marked entrances, and in several cases a beach that exists at its current width only because sand is pumped back after storms. These strips also concentrate the register's clearest examples of planning decisions with visible consequences, for better and for worse. Sargassum, where it occurs, is cleared on hotel frontage and less reliably on the public sections between.

Not to be confused with

Against Grand Resort Beaches: density and continuity decide. Against Urban Icon Beaches: a strip serves visitors; an urban beach serves a city that exists for other reasons.
