Beaches in Maui
2 beaches · 2 beach worlds
A volcanic island of two shield volcanoes joined by an isthmus, which gives it more distinct coasts than its size suggests. The west and south are dry and hold the resort beaches; the north shore has the wind and the big-wave surf at Jaws; the east, along the Hāna road, is wet, forested and holds the black and red sand beaches. Humpback whales calve in the channel between Maui, Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi from December to April and are visible from the sand without a boat. Practically: the road to Hāna is the constraint on the east coast, with several hundred curves and dozens of one-lane bridges, and Waiʻānapanapa State Park now requires an advance reservation. Kaihalulu's access path crosses unstable ground and county advice has repeatedly been against it. Winter north swell brings shore break to west-coast beaches, and humpback whales are visible from the sand between December and April.
The two are different kinds of shore. Both sit on open ocean. Together they account for 5.2 km of shore. · computed from the 2 records below
