An Atlantic archipelago off Senegal, dry, volcanic and constantly windy. Sal and Boa Vista have the long pale beaches and the resorts; the other islands are mountainous, green in places and have almost no sand at all. The wind is constant and is the archipelago's defining condition — it made Sal and Boa Vista kitesurfing destinations and it makes shade a genuine consideration on beaches that have none. The islands hold one of the largest loggerhead nesting populations in the world, with organised night patrols between June and October and protected sections marked. Atlantic swell and currents are strong on the exposed coasts and lifeguard cover is essentially absent. Inter-island travel is by air or by ferry and the ferries are weather-dependent; a plan that assumes a crossing on a particular day is a plan that may not survive it. The archipelago also sits directly under the Saharan dust plume for part of the year, which is why the winter light is hazy and orange.

The two are different kinds of shore. The sand is quartz sand throughout, and both sit on open ocean. Together they account for 26 km of shore. · computed from the 2 records below
