Beaches in Croatia

2 beaches · 2 beach worlds

Over a thousand islands along a karst coast, and almost no sand anywhere. Croatian beaches are white limestone pebble, sometimes concrete platform, and the water is exceptionally clear precisely because nothing goes into suspension. The coast is deeply indented, sheltered by island chains, and effectively tideless. The bora, a katabatic wind falling off the mountains, can arrive within an hour and close ferry routes; it is the main variable in any Adriatic plan. Water shoes are not optional on most of this coast, and the register says so plainly because visitors arrive expecting sand. Beaches are public throughout, including in front of hotels, and many of the best are on islands reached by ferry — which the bora can cancel. The season is short and sharply peaked: July and August are extremely busy and expensive, June and September are the same sea with half the people. Practicalities: ferries are the transport and the bora cancels them, parking at coastal towns is limited and expensive in August, and much of the shore is entered from concrete platforms with ladders rather than from sand.

The two are different kinds of shore. The sand is pebble throughout, and both sit on sheltered water. · computed from the 2 records below
