Beaches in Egypt

Two seas and two entirely different propositions. The Red Sea coast and the Sinai have reef within metres of the shore, warm clear water year-round and a diving industry that has run since the 1980s; the shoreline itself is often coral rubble, which is why entry is by jetty. The Mediterranean coast at Alexandria and Marsa Matruh is sand, cooler, and used mainly by Egyptians. Ras Mohammed at the tip of Sinai was the country's first national park and remains among the best-known dive sites in the world. Practically: entry to the reef is by jetty at most Red Sea sites because the shore is living coral, and standing on it is both destructive and injurious. Marine park fees apply at Ras Mohammed and elsewhere. Summer air temperatures on the Red Sea coast are extreme, though the water stays comfortable year-round, and the season most visitors want runs October to April. Away from the resorts, modest dress is expected, as it is across the country.

All three are reef-front beaches. The sand is coral sand throughout, and all sit on reef at the shore. Together they account for 1.8 km of shore. · computed from the 3 records below
