Beaches in El Salvador

1 beach · 1 beach world

A short Pacific coast of dark volcanic sand and consistent point breaks, backed by a volcanic chain that runs the length of the country. The surf is the reason almost anyone comes to the coast. Three hundred kilometres of Pacific coast, volcanic, dark-sanded and dominated by surf. The point breaks at Punta Roca, El Sunzal and El Zonte are among the most consistent in Central America and the country has built a tourism strategy on them explicitly. The volcanic chain runs a few kilometres inland, which is why the sand is grey and the water deepens quickly. Rip currents are strong and lifeguard cover is limited. The dry season runs November to April; the rains from May bring the biggest swell. Security has improved substantially in recent years and remains a subject visitors should read about independently. The Ruta de las Flores inland and the country's volcanoes are within two hours of the coast.
