Beaches in Malta

2 beaches · 2 beach worlds

Three inhabited islands of limestone with a coastline that is mostly rock platform rather than sand — Maltese swimming is done from ladders and flat rock as often as from a beach. What sand exists is concentrated in a handful of bays in the north of Malta and on Gozo, and it fills completely in August. The islands have almost no rivers, so the water is exceptionally clear. The archipelago has been continuously inhabited for seven thousand years and the density of that history is unusual anywhere near a beach. Comino, between the two main islands, holds the Blue Lagoon and is otherwise almost uninhabited. Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa in the north-west are the mainland's two sand beaches of any size, and Ramla on Gozo has the orange-red sand and the least building behind it. The season runs May to October and the sea stays swimmable well into November.
