Beaches in Samoa

1 beach · 1 beach world

Two main volcanic islands where almost all land is held under customary title by extended families, which means most beaches are village-owned and a small fee is paid to whoever holds the land. It is the normal arrangement, it is universal, and visitors should expect it rather than be surprised by it. Beach fales — open-sided thatched huts standing on the sand with meals included — are the standard accommodation and are run by families rather than hotels, which is the reason a beach here has a household behind it instead of a resort. The islands are young and steep, with lava coast, blowholes and waterfalls reaching the sea, and the reef sits close in along most of the shore. To Sua Ocean Trench, a collapsed lava tube filled with seawater and entered by a ladder, is the island's other fixture. The 2009 tsunami struck the southern and eastern coasts of Upolu directly and the villages there rebuilt further inland, which is visible from the road. Practically: Sunday is widely observed and much of the country closes, modest dress away from the sand is expected, the dry season runs May to October, and the two main islands are linked by a car ferry.
