The Thai province on the Andaman coast where limestone karst reaches the sea, producing cliffs, towers and peninsulas that no road crosses. Railay is joined to the mainland and reachable only by boat because of it; the same rock produced the climbing industry here and the caves used as shrines. The province includes the Phi Phi islands, where Maya Bay was closed for three and a half years and reopened under a regime that prohibits swimming. The practical geography: Railay has no road and is reached only by longtail boat, Ao Nang is the road-accessible base, and the Phi Phi islands are an hour offshore. Tides determine where boats can land on the eastern side of the Railay peninsula. The season runs November to April; the monsoon from May brings rough crossings and rip currents. National park fees apply at Maya Bay and several other island sites, and numbers there are capped.
The two are different kinds of shore. The sand is quartz sand throughout, and both sit on sheltered water. · computed from the 2 records below
