Artificial & Reclaimed Beaches

9 beaches

Beaches that exist because someone built them: reclaimed land, imported sand, engineered breakwaters. Some are excellent and some are barely usable; what unites them is that the shoreline is a design decision. These records exist because a register that documented only natural shorelines would be describing a world that no longer exists. Sand is imported, profiles are engineered, and in two cases the land beneath the beach was built as well. Several of them are excellent beaches; one prohibits swimming entirely because of water quality. The register treats them as a category rather than as a footnote. Where such a beach works well, the register says so; where it does not, the record says that too, and neither judgement is softened by the fact of construction. Water quality rather than sand quality is the usual constraint on how these beaches may be used.

Not to be confused with

Against Urban Icon Beaches: many city beaches have been nourished or rebuilt. The test is whether the beach would exist at all without the works.
