Forty metres of sand that appears in more photographs than it can hold people.
Caló des Moro is a tiny cove on the south-eastern coast of Mallorca, near Santanyí, reached down a rough path and a set of rock steps from a residential street. The beach is about forty metres across.
It is the clearest case in the Mediterranean of a place made famous by photography and then overwhelmed by it. The cove is genuinely beautiful — pale sand between low limestone walls, pine above, water the colour the photographs show — and it is also very small. Social media traffic through the 2010s brought numbers the site cannot absorb, and Santanyí has since taken measures, including removing the beach from its own tourism promotion, restricting parking and posting information asking people to consider going elsewhere.
The shore is fine white sand shelving into clear, calm, sheltered water. There is no swell, no facilities and no shade after the middle of the morning. The rock on both sides is climbable and people jump from it, which the council discourages. Cala s'Almunia lies a few hundred metres north and shares the same access path; it has no sand at all, just rock platforms and boathouses cut into the stone, and it absorbs people far better than its famous neighbour.
Nothing is built. The access is through a residential area where parking is limited and enforced, and the path down is steep, loose and unsuitable for anyone unsteady.
A hundred and fifty steps down to about forty metres of sand, and Santanyí has taken the place off its own tourism promotion because it cannot hold what arrives. Go at dawn or go to Cala Mondragó. That is the municipality's own advice and it is sound. Cala s'Almunia next door shares the same descent and the same problem, and Es Trenc half an hour west is a long natural beach with dunes and room for everybody.

Questions
Is Caló des Moro worth visiting?
Early in the morning or out of season, yes. In summer between mid-morning and evening the cove holds far more people than its size allows, and the council itself has asked visitors to consider alternatives.
Where do you park?
In the residential streets above, where space is limited and restrictions are enforced. Arriving early is the practical answer.
How hard is the descent?
A steep, loose path and rock steps. Not suitable for anyone unsteady on their feet, and not for pushchairs.
What facilities are there at Caló des Moro?
None at all. No toilets, no bar, no shade after mid-morning. Bring water and take rubbish away.
What are the alternatives?
Cala Llombards, Cala Santanyí and Cala Mondragó are nearby, larger, less photographed and have parking and facilities.
