Schematic shoreline — real coastline pending

A private island the size of a field, ringed by the best reef in Zanzibar and closed to day visitors.

Mnemba is a small island off the north-eastern corner of Unguja, in Zanzibar — a triangle of coral sand about a kilometre and a half around, with a fringing atoll reef enclosing it.

The island is leased privately and holds a single lodge of a few bandas; day visitors may not land. What is open is the water: the Mnemba Atoll Marine Conservation Area surrounds it, and the reef inside is the best in the archipelago by a clear margin — dolphins are resident, green turtles nest on the island's beaches, and the drop-off on the eastern side is the region's principal dive site.

The reef has had a difficult two decades. Bleaching events, anchor damage and pressure from the numbers of boats visiting caused measurable decline, and a coral restoration programme has been running since the late 2010s with nursery-grown fragments transplanted onto damaged sections. Recovery is partial and is documented rather than claimed. The atoll's reef encloses a lagoon of a few square kilometres, shallow enough to snorkel across and deep enough at its edge to dive.

The beaches themselves are white coral sand and can only be seen from the water unless you are staying. That arrangement is worth stating plainly: this is a record of a place most readers will experience as a reef rather than as a beach. Matemwe on the Unguja shore opposite has the lodges and the boats, and Kendwa and Nungwi at the northern tip are the beaches that keep their water at low tide.

You cannot land. The island is one lodge and day visitors stay in the water, which is the better half anyway — the atoll has the best reef in Zanzibar by a clear margin, with resident dolphins and a steep eastern wall. The coral has declined from bleaching and boat pressure and is being replanted; recovery is partial and documented rather than claimed.
