Boat-Only Beaches
32 beaches · 30 countries
No road, no path — arrival is by water.
A small collection and a self-selecting one: the absence of land access is what keeps these beaches as they are. It occurs for four reasons. Geology, where cliffs or karst simply prevent a route, as at Navagio, Railay and Stiniva. Distance, where an island or cay has no reason for a road, as with the Bahamian and Panamanian sandbars. Law, where landing is regulated or prohibited outright — Honopū permits only a swim ashore and Cala Goloritzé forbids boats from landing at all. And tide, where a sandbank exists for a few hours and then does not. The practical consequences are consistent: time ashore is set by an operator, facilities are what the boat brought, and rough weather cancels the visit entirely rather than making it uncomfortable.
Not to be confused with
Against Castaway Beaches, a Beach World: several of these are twenty minutes from a marina and busy with day boats. Difficulty of access and emptiness are different things.
