NGAPALI BEACH 18°27.000′ N · 94°21.000′ E 2 km SCHEMATIC
Schematic shoreline — real coastline pending

Fishing boats pulled up between the hotels, and the palms standing right at the sand.

Ngapali runs along the Rakhine coast of Myanmar, south of Thandwe, three kilometres of golden sand facing the Bay of Bengal. It is the country's best-known beach and, by the standards of Southeast Asia, an almost undeveloped one.

That is partly by accident of history. Myanmar was largely closed to visitors for decades and opened to significant tourism only after 2011; the beach economy that grew here in the years following was small, and the political situation since 2021 has reduced it again substantially. What that means practically is a coast with a handful of hotels and villages that still fish — the boats are pulled up on the sand between properties, and the catch goes to the market rather than to a photograph.

The shore is fine golden sand with a gentle slope and warm, calm water through the dry season. It is open to the Bay of Bengal, which matters from May onwards: the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain, rough seas and effective closure, and most hotels shut. Coconut palms stand close to the sand along much of the length.

Development is low-rise, spread out and interspersed with villages. There is no strip, no promenade, no nightlife of note. Bicycles and pickup taxis are the transport, and Thandwe airport is a short drive. The fishing villages at either end — Lintha to the south, Gyeiktaw to the north — are where the beach economy actually lives, and the market at Thandwe is the place to see what comes off the boats.

Three kilometres of golden sand where the boats still fish and the catch goes to the market rather than to a photograph. Everything closes for the monsoon from May. Whether to travel to Myanmar at all is a judgement about the country rather than about the beach, and this register documents the second and leaves the first to you.

Questions

When is the season at Ngapali Beach?

Roughly October to April. The south-west monsoon from May brings heavy rain and rough seas, and most hotels close entirely.

Is it developed?

Very little by regional standards. A handful of low-rise hotels along three kilometres, interspersed with fishing villages that still work.

Is Ngapali Beach good for swimming?

In the dry season yes — gentle slope, warm calm water. During the monsoon the Bay of Bengal is rough and swimming is not sensible.

How do you get to Ngapali Beach?

By air to Thandwe, a short drive from the beach. Overland routes exist and are long.

Should you go?

That is a judgement about Myanmar rather than about the beach. Conditions in the country have changed substantially since 2021; check current advice and form your own view.
