Beaches in Myanmar

The coast runs some two thousand kilometres from the Bangladeshi border down the Rakhine shore, round the Ayeyarwady delta and along the Tanintharyi coast to Thailand, and almost none of it is developed. Tourism infrastructure has always been thin and has contracted substantially since 2021; the monsoon closes the whole western coast from May to September, when hotels shut entirely. Anyone considering travel here should form a view on the country's situation before considering the beaches, which is a judgement this register does not make for readers. Ngapali on the Rakhine coast is the country's best-known beach and remains almost undeveloped by regional standards. The Mergui archipelago in the far south holds some eight hundred largely uninhabited islands, reached by liveaboard and visited by almost nobody. Access to much of the coast has always been restricted and remains so, which is one reason so little of it appears in any register.
