Granite in the north, limestone in the east, and some of the finest sand in the Mediterranean throughout. The Costa Smeralda is the developed part; the Golfo di Orosei on the east coast is the opposite, a wall of limestone with beaches at its foot reachable only on foot or by boat. The island has the finest sand in the Mediterranean and increasingly protects it: several beaches now cap daily numbers and require booking, taking sand is prohibited and fined, and the Golfo di Orosei's coves may be looked at from boats but not landed on. The north-east is the developed Costa Smeralda with its architectural code; the east is a wall of limestone with no road; the west and south are windier and quieter. Season runs May to October. Practicalities: several beaches now require booking and charge a fee, taking sand is prohibited and fined at the airport, and the east coast coves are reached on foot or by boat with no road access at all.
The two are different kinds of shore. Both sit on sheltered water. · computed from the 2 records below
