Beaches in the French Riviera
4 beaches · 3 beach worlds
The coast from Saint-Tropez to Menton, and the place where beach culture as an industry began. Most of its beaches are narrow and pebbled; its reputation rests on what was built behind them. Two things define the coast in practice. Most of its beaches are pebble rather than sand, which surprises visitors and is why the water is so clear — nothing goes into suspension. And much of the frontage is occupied by licensed private concessions renting loungers, with free public sections between them that are marked and busier. The season runs May to September, the water is warm from June, and the coast is at its best out of season when the promenades are used by residents. Practicalities: the coast is reachable end to end by a frequent regional train line, which is faster and easier than driving in summer. Parking near the popular beaches is difficult and expensive from June to September, and several municipalities restrict access on peak days.
They spread across three beach worlds, the largest group being two beach-club shores. All are reached on foot. Together they account for 12 km of shore. · computed from the 4 records below
